Detox to a Healthier You

As a Naturopathic doctor, I’ve learned how the body functions and what is required for the organ systems within the body to function properly. Many of the nutrients received by the body can be used up quickly and inefficiently when the body has a high toxin burden. When we support our bodies with regular cleansing and detoxification we can effectively reduce the toxic burden and prevent further toxic build-up.

The process of detoxification is a series of biochemical reactions that deactivates toxins and eliminates them from the body through the main organs of detoxification; the skin, liver, kidneys, and intestines. Cleansing regularly and utilizing diet and lifestyle to support daily cleansing will improve the overall elimination of toxins from the body, leaving the body feeling more balanced and whole.

I have found detoxification to be one of the highest forms of disease prevention not only in my practice but also in my personal life.  Living in LA or any metropolitan city, the body is exposed to numerous forms of toxins. With the stresses of today’s society and the number of pollutants in the air in general, as well as the many toxins in processed foods, it’s hard to avoid exposure to toxins. Most often some exposure to toxins during daily life is inevitable. Committing to regular detoxification has proved beneficial in preventing and relieving many symptoms including but not limited to constipation, gas, bloating, allergies, asthma, joint pain, muscle aches, issues with sleep, mood disturbances etc.

I understand that committing to an ongoing healthy lifestyle can be difficult at first, but once you experience the results it will continue to get easier. I believe if you start simple and then build on the changes that you make, you are well on your way to a new and healthier you!

Some of the easy and simple things you can do:

  • Switching to organic

Simple choosing organic over non-organic foods can eliminate a number of harmful synthetic pesticides and preservatives that may prove detrimental to overall health. Organic vegetables tend to have higher nutritional value providing more nutrients to the body helps in supporting natural detoxification. By eating organic we're also able to reduce our risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

  • Improving your quality of drinking water

Personally, I prefer to have mountain spring water delivered from a reliable source. Naturally occurring spring water is high in minerals from the earth. However, this source of water isn’t always available to everyone.  The next best option is a high-quality water filter that removes all the things we don’t want in our water. For example; fluoride, chlorine or chloramine; the main containments found in drinking water according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). It is good to research filters before buying, as a lot of these filters remove the essential minerals our bodies require from water to absorb and utilize the water correctly.

  • Eating bitter greens

Increasing your intake of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, cilantro, arugula, collards, and kale. The bitter taste stimulates the release of bile and the elimination of toxins, supporting the liver, one of the main organs of detoxification.

  • Exercise
Exercise in one form or another is crucial for the proper functioning of all biochemical systems. Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body/mind, increasing oxygen and vital nutrients to the body/mind, thereby enhancing the overall functioning of the body’s biochemical processes.
  • Sauna therapy

The benefits of sauna therapy have been known since the Finns popularized the usage in ancient ceremonies, dating back to 5000-3000 BC, for mental, spiritual and physical cleansing. Sauna therapy assists our largest organ the skin in detoxification. The heat helps to excrete toxins from the body via the sweat glands and pores. Essentially speeding up the process of eliminating unwanted toxins.  Sauna Therapy also serves in promoting healthy circulation and heart health. Please be advised this is not recommended unless supervised by a physician if you have serious health issues including but not limited to heart conditions, lymph and/or vascular disorders.

  • Eliminating chemicals and toxic cleaning supplies from your home and office.

Limiting your exposure to chemicals will assist the body in lowering its daily toxic load thereby allowing the body to move the toxins already stored within the body's tissues and organs.

  • Choosing natural and organic hygiene and skincare products

Often times many consumers are unaware of the toxins contained in everyday products such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, and lotions. One key to purchasing natural and healthy products is, read the ingredients.  If there is something on there you don’t know what it is, you can’t pronounce it or it simply has a straight-up chemical name, don’t buy it. I recommend shopping at your local natural and/or organic markets where there is more of a selection of healthy options.

For additional support in cleansing and detoxifying you may also like to include:

  • IV Nutrient Therapy
  • Injection Therapy
  • Coffee Enemas
  • Supplements and protocols supporting detoxification and cleansing
  • Lifestyle counseling

Once you have made some of the lifestyle changes I’ve mentioned above you will begin to experience better health and a better quality of living!
